Snip’s Death
Knowing a bit about slaughterhouses, including that laws exist forbidding people to take photographs of them or even around them, I know they shelter ugly deaths. These deaths exhibit the lifelessness of even life itself—at the hands of a capitalist economy—not life but things becoming other things, profits ebbing and flowing like blood. Dolly died that way. My horse died differently. Perhaps he suffered, perhaps not. Yet to some extent his death happened on his own terms. He chose the place and in some way chose the time.
The rest of Snip’s life right through to his death and burial at age twenty-five in 2004 happened at Margie’s home. He was in a pasture near her home, a trailer sitting on what might be the most beautiful land in the world. The golden curves of grass and land and sky moved like water toward a horizon filled with light blue mountains, somehow gentle when seen from such a distance, as though they were the painted-on edges decorating a new baby’s room, a baby born to the gods.
Because many things are slow in Montana, the news of Snipaway’s seemingly gentle death took months to reach me. When it did, I was at work in my office at the private college where I taught, with a guest speaker about to give a lecture to my class on the family. I remember looking out my office window and thinking of this one, of my family, now gone.
Snip had laid down and died one night, Margie’s email said. They found him in the morning. They used a backhoe to dig a large hole right out there in his pasture and buried him in it. From grass he came and to grass he did return.
